Strategies for Engaging White Men as Allies

Description

White men often struggle to find their place as allies standing alongside their colleagues who are fighting for more inclusion and equity for all. There are understandable historical and socialization reasons for that, but the time has come for a seismic shift.

As diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts seek to move workplaces and society into a new paradigm—one in which all people are valued and equity is realized—an important question remains: how can white men be engaged as allies, and even as co-conspirators, in this work?

This presentation explores strategies for calling white men into inclusion efforts and investing them in decentering whiteness, advocating for others, and dismantling the structures that have produced inequity. Dr. Michael Baran examines what makes it difficult to bring white men fully on board and shares practical strategies that he—a white male practitioner—has found to be effective.
