Sankofa is not simply a phrase or a symbol. It is a core value to racial justice work. Loosely translated as "go back and get it," Sankofa encourages us all to not only know the past, but to develop a historical consciousness so that we may use our power and identity more justly in this world. But because it is such a powerful mechanism for systemic change, Sankofa is under attack by forces that know that forgetting is the first crucial step to getting folks to participate in their own oppression.
