Description

In this session on Afrofuturism in Black music and literature, Dr. Joseph Winters II explores how writers and artists have responded to tendencies to imagine futures without Black people in it. By introducing writers (W.E.B. Du Bois and Octavia Butler) and musicians (Erykah Badu and Janelle MonĂ¡e), this discussion centers Black people, fantasy, and the imagination of futures. This imagination refuses the ways in which Black people have been systematically denied a future. But Afrofuturism also challenges conventional notions of time and invites us to think differently about the relationship between past, present, and future.
