The University of California Office of the President (UCOP) is dedicated to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion, and becoming an antiracist organization. Equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts were usually led by volunteer groups and often championed by leaders of color. In addition, there was a fragmented approach to this effort with the lack of a unifying vision and roadmap. A strategic framework was developed to guide UCOP in focusing their energy and resources on actions that position the organization in achieving its academic, research, and public service missions. “Equity and Inclusion” was identified as a key value among the organization’s seven core values. As such, the organization needed an actionable strategy for strengthening a more equitable culture of inclusion and belonging across the organization that not only sought continuous, visible, and demonstrated commitment by leadership, but input and accountability from all levels of the organization. With leadership approval and guidance, a cross-discipline, multidivision advisory group was established to develop a UCOP Unified EDI Framework. The UCOP Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and Anti-Racism Advisory Group (AG) worked over the last year to develop an organizationwide framework that includes a mission statement, vision statement, EDI tenets, and goals for each level of the organization. The resulting framework was a product of sometimes difficult discussions that included cross-divisional, cross-functional, and multilevel input that places UCOP’s equity and inclusion core value into action. The presentation will share our strategic approach, the lessons learned, and best practices we leveraged to hold each level of UCOP accountable, and provide a roadmap for continuously centering equity in all that we do.
