How Your Best Efforts at LGBTQIA+ Inclusion are Falling Short

Description
Most organizations try to create a culture of inclusion and psychological safety for their LGBTQIA+ employees, through ERGs, Pride events, ally stickers, etc. Despite these well-intended efforts, research shows that people are not feeling the high degree of inclusion and safety desired. In this session, Michael Baran and Thomas Barnette of Iris Inclusion will describe the subtle acts of exclusion (SAE) that happen frequently and that continue to erode trust. They will describe what these subtle acts of exclusion are, why they are such a significant problem, and what we can do about them. They will provide strategies for proactively creating trust and for responding to SAE when they happen. The net effect of these efforts will be that people feel validated and visible while also performing to their highest potential with their teams and organizations. The session will be engaging and interactive, drawing on research, best practices, lessons from our decades of diversity, equity, and inclusion work.
