Decolonizing Leadership: Understanding Self, Standing for Equity
Timezone
EDT
Maileen Hamto
Description

There is a challenge and opportunity for racial equity advocates to embed a focus on decoloniality in their leadership approaches. In terms of racial equity, decolonization is the process of integrating a focus on naming and resisting colonization, imperialism, and state-sanctioned violence. The session is geared toward leaders from diasporic Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities who are invested in infusing a decolonial approach to addressing systemic inequities. Like most social justice work, it starts with personal work: excavating the familial and ancestral wounds that prevent compassion and empathy. Drawing from the Pilipino Indigenous values of “kapwa” (seeing oneself in the other), Maileen will share her personal journey, offer scholarly works on decoloniality, and present ideas for practices, exercises, and journaling prompts. She will also provide practical tips for embedding decoloniality in mainstream workplace discourses.
