Surviving the System, Staying in the Fire: Advancing Racial Equity in the Workplace
Date & Time
Thursday, April 25, 2024, 1:00 PM - 1:55 PM
Maileen Hamto

Operationalizing diversity, equity, and inclusion in organizational contexts requires a nuanced understanding of organizational culture, change management, and the mechanics of institutional and interpersonal racism. In this session, I will present findings from a doctoral research study that examined how DEI leaders’ reflexivity, social identity, commitment to social justice, ability to navigate organizational dynamics, and skill in applying change management strategies contribute to developing equity-focused cultures that are adaptable and responsive to change. Participants will also learn about research and conceptual framework on critical race consciousness. We will explore how DEI leaders remain committed to equity work, which necessitates self-compassion and self-help strategies to deal with negative emotions about work. The presentation offers insight into how diversity management practices must evolve to address the burgeoning challenges of centering racial equity and antiracism principles in organizational contexts.
