Rabbi Sharon Brous reminds us that "the only liberation will be a shared liberation. The only justice is a justice for all.” As Jewish-Latinx practitioners focused on DEI, intergroup dialogue, and social justice, Bernardo Ferdman and Maia Ferdman acknowledge that this quest has felt particularly challenging — yet more imperative than ever — since the Hamas attacks in Israel on October 7 and the subsequent war in Gaza. Increases in antisemitism, Islamophobia, recriminations, and polarization have led them to question how they might actually achieve shared liberation when it can sometimes feel like they are actively working against each other’s liberation. How do we build bridges and foster inclusion between groups whose interests can seem mutually exclusive or threatening to one another? How do we deal with these challenges as Jews actively engaged in DEI and liberation work? What tools, frameworks, and perspectives help us challenge our assumptions and reach across differences, even when it seems impossible to do so? Join this father-and-daughter team in an exploration and conversation to challenge all-or-nothing thinking. Bernardo and Maia will share their own personal struggles and hopes as practitioners engaged in the work of shared liberation, and they will invite participants to explore their own. The session will particularly focus on the need to rethink identity, intergroup boundaries, and frameworks and methods for dialogue within and across groups in the search for liberation and justice.
