Davianna Griffin, Thick Like Me
Jazelynn Goudy, Marymount Manhattan College

This workshop will explore ways to acknowledge, celebrate, and advocate for thick Black women. Problematizing the assumed connection between health and body size, this session will confront the fatphobic orientation of American culture and promote holistic well-being. Using dance training as an example, facilitators will examine how socialization perpetuates the oppression of thick Black women in both dance and culture. Participants will engage in critical reflection and discussion, sharing tools and strategies to support Black women professionally and pedagogically. Through contemporary examples, this session will empower thick Black women across diverse identities and experiences, affirming their presence, power, and joy.
